Kendra Shaw is a junior Crown Scholar and member of UHP majoring in Biology with a Psychology minor. This past spring semester, Kendra won the UNC Charlotte Miss Black and Gold title and is in the running for the state title in the fall. “I wanted to challenge myself and push beyond my comfort zone and that is what the pageant allowed me to do,” says Kendra. Her platform is centered around prevention education in healthcare, specifically safer sexual practices. Since being crowned, she has turned that platform into an organization called Project S.A.F.E.
Through Project S.A.F.E., she has had the opportunity to work with West Charlotte High School by educating and mentoring youth about safer sexual practices that will decrease teen pregnancy and lower STD/STI rates in the Charlotte community. Winning at the state level would help Kendra to expand her organization into a non-profit, reaching beyond Charlotte. You can support Kendra’s efforts in becoming Miss Black and Gold North Carolina by following Project S.A.F.E. on social media at @projectsafe_.
